In a tragic event early Thursday morning, Alexa Stakely, a devoted mother and speech-language pathologist, lost her life while trying to stop her car from being stolen with her six-year-old son inside. The heartbreaking event occurred around 1:30 a.m. in the 6300 block of Blue Knoll Drive at the White Oak Park Condominiums. Stakely, 29, had just finished her shift as a server and was picking up her son from the babysitter’s home. She placed her sleeping child in her Honda CR-V and left the car running while she returned to the babysitter’s doorway to collect his belongings. As she came back, Stakely saw someone inside her vehicle, which was beginning to back out onto the road. In a desperate attempt to save her son, she ran towards the car, screaming for the driver to stop. Witnesses heard her frantic pleas as she tried to stop the thieves. Unfortunately, the car hit her, knocking her to the pavement and inflicting a fatal head injury. Despite the horror, her son remained unharmed.

The suspects abandoned the vehicle a short distance away and fled on foot, jumping a fence into a neighboring apartment complex. Witnesses reported seeing two males running north past where Stakely lay on the ground.

Earlier that morning, surveillance footage had captured a group of males looking into apartments in the nearby Castenea Way area. Two of these individuals matched the descriptions of those seen fleeing the scene after Stakely was struck. Stakely was rushed to Mount Carmel East Hospital in critical condition, where she succumbed to her injuries at 8:43 a.m. She leaves behind a legacy of compassion and dedication through her work and her role as a mother. Stakely was a speech-language pathologist at Winchester Trail Elementary School in the Canal Winchester Local Schools district. Known as "Ms. Alexa" to her students, she had been with the district for five years.

The district released a heartfelt statement describing Stakely’s commitment to her profession and her son. “Alexa was passionate about children and speech-language therapy. She was smart and compassionate, and she cared so much about helping children develop their ability to communicate. She was a great mom who was incredibly dedicated to her son. Ms. Stakely made a difference in the lives of the students and families she worked with and will be missed by so many in our community and beyond.”

Stakely, a single mother, also worked as a server to support her family. She was a resident of Pickerington and held a master’s degree in speech-language pathology from Ohio State University. Her brother, Hayden Swartz, spoke to WCMH, expressing his grief and admiration for his sister. “Alexa was just like an extremely outgoing, resilient person and a mother. And just her character was unmatched,” he said.

The community mourns the loss of Alexa Stakely, a woman whose life was dedicated to helping others and whose final moments were spent heroically trying to protect her child.
