My Journey to Dental Implants: Part 2

My Journey to Dental Implants: Part 2

My Journey to Dental Implants: Part 2. Deciding to get dental implants was not an easy choice. For years, I debated with myself—going back and forth, weighing the pros and cons, and wondering how this major surgery might change my life. After much reflection, I’ve finally decided to move forward, and this is a journey I never imagined sharing publicly. Yet here we are, in Part 2 of my story.

Two Treatment Plans: Making the Tough Choice

At my last dental appointment, I was faced with two distinct treatment options. The first involved saving my remaining teeth and rehabbing my smile through a lengthy and costly process. The second option was full-mouth dental implants. Surprisingly, the implant route came out to be nearly $20,000 cheaper than the extensive work required to preserve my existing teeth. Despite the savings, finances were not the main factor in my decision. For me, it was about long-term health, comfort, and putting my ongoing dental struggles behind me for good.

My Long History of Dental Issues

Dental challenges have been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. It all started in childhood, with an accident that left my two front teeth broken. Root canals and crowns followed, but unfortunately, that wasn’t the end of my problems.

As a teenager, I had to get braces, which involved extracting several teeth to make room for realignment. On top of that, certain medications stained my teeth, a problem that worsened over the years due to my habits. To make matters more complicated, I have a thick jawbone and extra bone growth, which makes me ineligible for dentures. These issues weren't just cosmetic—they affected my self-esteem, my comfort, and ultimately, my health.

For years, I avoided the dentist due to a deep-rooted phobia that grew over time. This wasn't just a mild fear—it was full-blown anxiety that began long before each appointment. Many can relate to this feeling, I’m sure. But as the crowns on my front teeth failed and my dental health deteriorated, I could no longer hide the damage. I even grew out my mustache to cover what I jokingly referred to as my “Snagglepuss” teeth. It worked to an extent, but I knew something had to change.

The Tipping Point: Time to Take Action, My Journey to Dental Implants: Part 2.

The turning point came when the pain became unbearable. Two molars had cracked beyond repair, and extractions were inevitable. After discussing it with my wife, I realized it was time to face my fears and visit the dentist. I was honest with them about my phobia, and they responded with two possible treatment plans.

The first plan involved saving what teeth I had left, a process that would require multiple procedures over an extended period. The second option—full-mouth dental implants—offered a permanent fix. Although it had a higher upfront cost, it promised fewer long-term issues and a better overall result. It became clear that dental implants were the best option for my future.

Why I Chose Dental Implants, My Journey to Dental Implants: Part 2.

After years of frustration, I’m ready for a permanent solution. Here are the key reasons why I chose dental implants:

- Appearance: As the host of a nationally syndicated radio show, *Law Enforcement Talk*, my smile has always been a source of insecurity. I’ve hidden behind my mustache and avoided photos for years. Dental implants will give me the confidence to smile again—something I haven’t done in a long time.

- Health: Poor oral health can lead to other serious health problems. Studies have shown that gum disease is linked to heart disease, diabetes, and more. By addressing my dental issues now, I’m hoping to improve my overall well-being.

- Comfort: Chewing has become a painful chore due to my cracked molars and missing crowns. Dental implants will restore my ability to eat comfortably, allowing me to enjoy food again without discomfort.

One of my concerns was how the surgery might impact my speech, which is crucial for my career in radio. Fortunately, a friend who recently had full-mouth dental implant surgery reassured me. After only a brief adjustment period, her speech returned to normal, giving me confidence that I can continue my work without significant interruptions.

What Comes Next? My Journey to Dental Implants: Part 2.

I’ve already scheduled my next steps: I’ll be getting my cracked molars extracted and replacing the crowns on my front teeth. In the meantime, I’m searching for the right dental group to perform the implant surgery, while continuing conversations with my current dentist.

This journey is more than just a personal one—it's one I want to share with others who are facing similar decisions. Through my radio show, podcast, and social media, I’ll be documenting every step of the process. I know I’m not the only one considering dental implants, and I hope that by sharing my story, I can provide insight, support, and solidarity to others.

Understanding Dental Implants

For those unfamiliar, dental implants are surgically inserted into the jawbone to replace missing teeth. They offer a stable, long-lasting alternative to traditional removable dentures. Each implant includes three main components: the implant body (which is placed in the jaw), the abutment (which connects the implant to the artificial tooth), and the crown or other artificial tooth that attaches to the abutment.

Implants provide numerous advantages over dentures, such as improved appearance, comfort, and function. However, as with any procedure, there are risks, including potential implant failure or complications after surgery. That said, with a healthy jawbone and proper care, dental implants have a high success rate and can significantly improve quality of life.

Looking Forward to the Journey. My Journey to Dental Implants: Part 2.

As I move forward with this process, I’m excited to share every aspect of my experience. I want to help others who are grappling with similar dental challenges by offering real insight into the implant journey. You're not alone—whether it’s the consultations, procedures, or the final results, I’ll be documenting it all.

My hope is that this journey will encourage others to take charge of their dental health, face their fears, and find the solution that works for them. Stay tuned for updates as I continue down the path toward a healthier, more confident smile. My Journey to Dental Implants: Part 2.
